How to Brief a Video Editor So You Don't Get Six Rounds of Revisions

The revision problem isn't the editor's timeline. It's your brief

When a first cut comes back wrong, the instinct is to blame the edit. Almost always, though, the actual problem happened a week earlier: the editor got a folder of footage and a one-line description of what you wanted, and had to guess at pacing, tone and priority. Six rounds of revisions is what guessing looks like when it's billed by the hour.

A brief that actually works isn't longer. It's more specific in the four places that matter.

1. Give a reference cut, not a mood word

"Make it feel energetic" tells an editor almost nothing actionable. A 30-second link to a cut you like, even from a competitor, tells them exactly how fast to cut, whether you want hard cuts or crossfades, and how loud the music sits under dialogue. Reference beats description every time.

2. Name your must-have shots before the edit starts

Every project has two or three shots that have to be in the final cut, a product beauty shot, a specific testimonial line, a logo reveal. List them explicitly. Everything else can be the editor's judgment call; these can't be found by accident in a 40-minute footage dump.

3. Give a runtime target and the platform it's for

A 90-second brand film and a 15-second Reel are different edits, not the same edit trimmed down. Platform changes aspect ratio, pacing, caption strategy and even where the strongest shot goes (first three seconds matter on social, not on a landing page video). Say both up front.

4. Set revision rounds as a number, not a vibe

"Send it back if it's not right" produces open-ended back-and-forth. "Two structured revision rounds, notes delivered as timestamped comments" produces a finished video. Agree on the number before the first cut, not after the third.

This is exactly why our own brief form asks for brief type, budget and timeline up front. The better the brief, the fewer rounds it takes to get to a cut everyone's happy with.
